To meet or not to meet: how to react to acquaintances' proposal to meet at the airport
Almost everyone has met friends, family, or acquaintances from vacation at least once in their lives. Usually, it is rare for anyone to refuse this request, but there are those who do not understand and wonder why not order a taxi and return home without additional escort?
Thus, for some people, meeting someone at the airport or train station is a manifestation of a strong relationship, while for others, it is not such a grand gesture. Opinions on this issue and what should be done were discussed in the Huffington Post.
Debates on social media
The discussion on X (formerly Twitter) began with a post by Cody Sanchez. She posted a screenshot of her correspondence with friends, writing: "As adults, don't ask your friends to pick you up from the airport. Use Uber, save your friendship."
This post stirred up the social media audience and divided people into two camps. Those who agree with Cody Sanchez believe that everyone should be responsible for themselves and not make their friends feel uncomfortable or give up their comfort. Others, however, argue that there are people who need to feel important and may be greatly offended by such a display of indifference.
What do etiquette experts think about this controversial issue?
In general, there is no single obvious solution to this issue. According to Diane Gottsman, author of "Modern Etiquette for a Better Life," and etiquette expert Nick Layton, meeting at the airport is more of a courtesy than an obligation. Therefore, you should appreciate your friends but not exploit them as volunteers.
Diane Gottsman says, "Adults need to understand that part of traveling involves making hotel reservations, visiting the bank, being prepared to tip in cash, and finding your own way to and from the airport."
"Etiquette is all about being considerate of other people, and I think any discussion that encourages people to think about kindness, consideration, and empathy is a positive one," said Nick Layton, adding, "I also don't ask my friends to help me move or paint my apartment. Some things are better left to professionals".
