Safety during a cruise: TikTok blogger's life hacks mocked
Famous cruise vlogger Victoria @VictoriasWay posted a video with safety tips for women on cruises. The woman's video immediately went viral online and gained 18.6 million views in just a month.
The peculiarity of the travel blogger's advice is that she suggests that women use unusual items in their rooms for safety, such as a towel, a coat hanger, and large furniture. "Safety tips for women on cruises," she captioned her video, as reported by the New York Post.
The woman's video was published a few days after the media reported that from 2015 to 2022, more than 450 reports of sexual assault on cruise ships were registered. At the same time, the number of such incidents is likely much higher, experts say, because victims are often too embarrassed to speak up.
She recommends that women take the following steps when returning to their cabin on the ship at night:
- Close the door and turn on the lights;
- Use a portable door lock to lock the door;
- Press the "do not disturb" button;
- Close the peephole on the door;
- Set the door alarm;
- Connect the door handle and deadbolt or door hinge to a coat rack for added security;
- Roll up a medium-sized towel and place it behind the handle to block it;
- Place a heavy piece of furniture near the door to block it;
- Install a wireless security camera in an inconspicuous place;
- Look around from the balcony to make sure you don't see anything strange;
- Lock the balcony and close the curtains.
It should be noted that the woman's non-standard advice caused a flurry of comments online. Not everyone was happy with the blogger's advice.
"You forgot guard dogs and a sniper tower with a searchlight," "Don't forget about salt circles to protect you from supernatural creatures," "A balcony? Do you have pirates training there or what?" users commented online.
