How to get a free class upgrade on a plane: experts share

Flying in business class doesn't cost all the money in the world - it's a real treat for passengers who can't always afford such a luxury.

The Huffington Post has compiled tips from some travel insiders and airline experts who share their advice and tricks on how to get a luxury seat in first class for free.

Dress tastefully to make an impression

The first very simple way to attract the attention of staff is to dress well and tastefully. This is according to David Doughty, CEO of Admiral Jet and an aviation expert with over 20 years of experience in the industry.

"An easy way to try to get an upgrade is to dress nicely! Believe it or not, clothing plays a huge role in how passengers are perceived by gate agents when it comes to granting a free upgrade, with 'worthy' candidates often being considered well-dressed (e.g. in elegant suits), although this will also depend on your overall demeanor, so make sure your attitude is elegant as well!

Travel solo

According to experts, you're much more likely to get an upgrade when you're flying alone rather than with a group or in a couple. Airlines sometimes only need to fill one seat in first class, and you're more likely to get that seat if you're alone.

"Couples and families traveling together are much less likely to get an upgrade than a single passenger because airlines tend to seat groups together," explains one industry expert. "So if a passenger is traveling alone, they have a better chance of being selected for an upgrade."

Remember a birthday or anniversary

If you're celebrating an anniversary or milestone, you have an even better chance of getting a free upgrade.

"Don't ask for a free upgrade, but mention the special occasion if it comes up naturally," says Jesse Moore, luxury travel expert and founder of the luxury travel website Pocket Wanderings.

"If you're traveling for a special occasion - like a honeymoon or a milestone birthday - then discuss it. Remember that if you say it's your birthday, don't make it up as they will be able to see your date of birth on your passport!"

Take advantage of loyalty programs

All the major airlines have many loyalty and frequent flyer programs, as well as a variety of credit cards that offer air miles, such as Avios, so it's worth signing up. "Make sure you sign up for any airline loyalty programs, especially if they are free," experts advise.
