What you need to know about flying with small children: an insight that will save your nervous system
Flying can be a hassle for people of all ages, as long security lines, flight delays, uncomfortable seats, and rude passengers all play their part.
But traveling with young children takes these minor inconveniences to a new level of stress.
Keeping them comfortable, entertained and fed throughout the flight is not easy. And it certainly requires parents and guardians to plan ahead. Therefore, flight attendants gave some tips on how to minimize the negative experience of traveling with young children, Huffington Host writes.
Make sure your ticket price allows you to choose your seats in advance
"Never buy tickets that are issued at the gate if you are traveling with a small child. This will increase the likelihood of being in different parts of the plane during the flight," said Brenda Orelus, flight attendant and blogger.
Choose your seats wisely
Before you travel, take the time to check the airline's website to see what they offer for those traveling with babies and children. Visit websites such as Seat Guru to view a map of the seats on your plane and determine the best seat for you and your child's needs.
Check in for your flight 24 hours before departure
On the day of the flight, talk to the gate agent to find out how full the flight is. Let them know why you are asking. If the flight is not sufficiently booked, ask if there is a possibility to move to an empty part of the plane to have more space for your baby or toddler.
Take milk or formula with you on board, don't rely on flight attendants
These are exempted items, so you can bring these drinks for your baby or toddler through the TSA checkpoint.
If you are breastfeeding, you can do so at any time during the flight. Flight attendants should provide you with this option.
Consider buying a travel stroller if you plan to fly a lot
"If traveling is a priority for your family, invest in a trolley to make your life easier on the road. Choose a trolley that folds quickly and easily, is lightweight and, most importantly, fits in the overhead bin on the plane," the flight attendants advise.
Pack snacks
You can bring a variety of (non-liquid) snacks for your children and divide them into small portions in separate bags, because they will inevitably spill.
Give your child something to eat or drink during takeoff and landing to minimize discomfort from pressure in the ears.
Dress your child comfortably and in layers
"Airplanes are cold. A sweater, layers of clothing and a blanket will help your child stay warm during the flight, especially if they are sitting near a window. This is always the coldest seat in the row. And the more comfortable the children are dressed, the happier they will be and the easier it will be for them to fall asleep," say the crew members.
Don't forget about a change of clothes and extra diapers
Remember that flights may be delayed and connections may be missed. You may find yourself without checked luggage, so pack your carry-on luggage to account for this possibility and add an extra set of clothes, diaper, etc.
Make sure you have enough toys and activities to keep your baby occupied
For example, gadgets and children's headphones will definitely save you from crying and bad moods.
If you plan to use electronics to distract your kids, pack a portable charger in your carry-on bag.
"Take a good power bank with you if you depend on your child's electronic device to keep them occupied. Sometimes there are not enough outlets on the plane and a power strip can be extremely useful with all the outlets, USB and USB-C ports.
