What you can and cannot take from your hotel room: expert advice
Many tourists want to take a nice souvenir from their trip, but not everyone is willing to pay for them. A hotel can help, offering many disposable items that you can take with you.
Mark Johnson, founder of H18YC, shared his advice on which souvenirs to take from a hotel room and which ones to leave behind. The Mirror writes about it.
Toiletries in small packages, such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, and body lotion, can be taken home. Their cost is already included in the room rate. However, products in large bottles should be left behind because they are reusable.
You can also take stationery (paper, pens, envelopes, postcards) with the hotel logo with you. They are often left behind for this purpose, organizing advertising in different cities and countries.
Small edible souvenirs, such as cookies, tea, coffee, and sugar, are usually free of charge. Drinks from the mini-fridge, if they are not just water, are paid for, so you can't steal them.
You can take free gifts (chocolate, candy, champagne) with you, as well as a sewing kit, dry cleaning bags, and slippers.
Ashtrays, glass bottles and mugs, paintings, and holy books, which are sometimes found in the rooms, do not belong to the guests. Taking hotel property with you is the same as stealing.
If in doubt, it's best to ask the hotel staff if you're allowed to take a particular item.
