Visiting famous landmarks and trying new restaurants are undoubtedly the highlights of most travels. But many travelers also enjoy shopping in a new place.
However, not all travel shopping is the same. And there are certain things that are better to just take with you on vacation. Travel experts shared the things they would never buy while traveling. Shoes
"I would never buy shoes while traveling. They tend to take up too much space in your luggage, and if you're an overpacker like me, you won't have room for them. However, you can always pack a pair of shoes that you are comfortable leaving at your destination in exchange for a new pair. Then it's a win-win!" says Ravi Roth, travel expert and host of The Gaycation Travel Show.
Glass items
"I would never buy anything that could break, like glass bottles of wine, olive oil, or sunscreen in a bottle. You don't want to risk ruining your clothes in your luggage for a bottle of red wine," adds Ravi.
Headphones
"One thing you should never buy while traveling is headphones. A good pair of headphones will make a long trip unforgettable, but if you're like me and forget about them, they're incredibly overpriced at both airports and travel stores," says Gabby Beckford, founder of the travel website Packs Light.
Food or other perishable products
"Don't try to bring home jams, meats, cheeses, or other perishable foods. It's not worth the potential hassle at customs," says Paul Jacobs, general manager and vice president of Kayak North America.
Gabby Beckford adds that he likes functional souvenirs (spices, accessories, notebooks, clothing, etc.), but he would never try to bring sand, shells, or any fresh produce or meat. "Sometimes it's okay, sometimes it's the biggest problem. If I want to bring certain foods home, I'll buy them at the airport to make sure they're approved by airport security," Beckford says.
Heavy items
"If you want to avoid additional fees, try not to buy heavy items that can increase the weight of your suitcase. If you're checking in luggage, be aware of your airline's weight limits," says Casey Brogan, consumer travel expert at Tripadvisor.
Full-size liquids
"Avoid packing liquids that don't meet your airline's guidelines. Otherwise, you may have to throw away expensive products. If you decide to buy toiletries at your destination, don't buy large bottles. Instead, choose small or travel-sized items that you can use for your trip and dispose of at the end of your trip to avoid waste," Brogan emphasizes.
Large valuables
"While it can be tempting to buy high-value items like jewelry, it's better to avoid the risk of loss or theft. Consider having valuables shipped home if you can," adds Casey Brogan.
Souvenirs with a big markup
"While some souvenirs may seem unique at the time, you can probably get them cheaper elsewhere. In addition, heavy souvenirs can be not only expensive but also a burden to carry. You may also find it difficult to transport heavy souvenirs home if you have limited luggage space," Dengler says.
