Traverse City named the best city for vacation in 2024: What to see there
Northwestern Michigan was recently recognized as one of the best vacation destinations in the world for 2024 with Traverse City being the regional centre of the region. Visitors can explore the vineyards and the most picturesque landscapes.
For example, Lake Michigan is one of the largest lakes in the world, with Mackinac Island in the strait between these two lakes (or halves of one lake). It is one of the most popular time capsules in a country where cars are banned and taxis are replaced by horses and carriages, TheTravel magazine writes.
Tourists are reminded that the state of Michigan consists of two large peninsulas in the Great Lakes: the settled Lower Peninsula and the wild Upper Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula (or UP) is one of the most incredible and complete places in the Midwest. It is a large area (approximately 30% of Michigan's landmass) with only about 3% of the state's population.
In addition, Grand Traverse Bay in northwestern Michigan is known for its beauty. This place is one of the best bases for exploring northwest Michigan. Traverse City is located at the top of the east and west arms of Grand Traverse Bay and has a population of about 15,500 people. Although it is a small city, it is actually the largest city in Michigan in this north.
Major attractions in and around Traverse City include Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake (dunes rising 400 feet), wine tasting rooms (from over 40 wineries), microbreweries, Mission Point Lighthouse (and other historic, winter-frozen lighthouses).
Enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, swimming, sailing, biking, camping in the warmer months and ice fishing, snowshoeing, skiing, fat tire biking, ice skating, and more in the colder months. Traverse City is worth visiting in winter as well as in summer.
Other towns and villages worth visiting in Northwest Michigan include Leland (a historic fishing village) and Glen Arbor (near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake). It should be borne in mind that the Northwest Traverse City region of Michigan is a recognized wine region. The Traverse City area boasts more than 40 wineries along with excellent microbreweries.
In addition, Northwest Michigan attracts visits to wineries on the Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsulas. The Traverse City Wine Coast boasts more than 40 excellent wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms, with wines ranging from dry whites to fine reds.
Traverse City is also known for its excellent microbreweries (considered one of the best beer cities in America) and excellent restaurants. In 2010, Traverse City was included in Bon Appetit's list of the best foodie destinations.
Traverse City is also known for its berries and fruits, including the annual National Cherry Festival, which attracts about 500,000 visitors each year. The National Cherry Festival is held annually from June 29 to July 6.
