How to find peace on a crowded cruise liner: advice for tourists who value tranquility
A cruise ship vacation is a great way to see the world and unwind. However, traveling with a crowd of people can sometimes make it challenging to find peace and quiet, as there are hundreds of other passengers creating noise and queues.
Former travel consultant Tom Baker, president of the Cruise Center, shared with Condé Nast Traveler how to find your own private corner on a large ship. The standard rooms may feel cramped, so opting for slightly pricier cabins with access to fresh air will be more appealing to everyone.
Choose the best cabins, even if they come at a higher price. Rooms with a terrace or balcony guarantee a private space for relaxation. More expensive tickets also often grant access to exclusive areas, swimming pools, restaurants, and bars where there will be fewer people.
Reserve sun loungers instead of merely occupying them with towels. Some cruise operators offer the option of reserving poolside seats for a specific time. While this may be a paid service, it will save you from the morning struggle for the best seats and crowds.
Explore the ship during your free time. Don't hesitate to wander through all the areas and search for cozy corners where you can relax. It could be a quiet bar, a library, or a lounge that takes longer to reach, thereby having fewer passengers.
Consult the crew. Crew members are familiar with the ship inside out. If you can't find a place to relax outdoors, ask them for advice.
