How not to miss hidden charges for hotel room service
Johnny Jet travels to more than 20 countries a year. He shares his first-hand knowledge about reward travel, travel credit cards, and life hacks for travellers.
In the article for johnnyjet.com, the tourist shares his experience with hotels. The traveller emphasizes that what annoys him the most about hotels is that they always try to cheat you.
"Nowadays, many hotels are trying to cheat you by adding the cost of delivery to the room service bill and then leave a blank line to add even more tips. Instead of indicating that it's an additional tip, they just pretend that gratuity is not included. It's confusing that not all hotels are the same. Some don't pass on the delivery cost to the server as a tip, and some do. Heck, I'm not even entirely sure if some of them also pass the entire tip on to the courier," Johnny emphasizes.
Food delivery can often take too long, which is very frustrating when you have hungry little kids to feed. But recently, Johnny had a credit for a hotel meal and he almost always signed the bill. However, he got a call and his wife signed it. When her husband later saw the receipt on the table, he asked if she had tipped. She said, "Yes, 20%, as usual."
"Yes, I almost always leave a 20% tip in a restaurant if the service is good, but I don't tip in the room because the tip is usually included, it's just disguised. My wife asked me why there is a blank line for tipping and why you are asked to calculate the total amount of the bill. Good question. There should be no tip if it is already included in the price. It's a scam and hotels need to be more transparent with their guests. If they continue to do this, room service will become the same as phone calls and minibars. It will become extinct..." Johnny adds.
Of course, there's something else hotels do that no one likes: the dreaded resort fee (or, as some hotels call it, "destination fee"), which is even worse. However, that's a whole other story.
