Emirates flight attendant tells how to improve your well-being during a long flight
Emirates flight attendant Kara Eastman has shared her advice for Britons traveling on long-haul flights this year. She explained how to plan a great flight and avoid jet lag
The Emirates flight attendant shared her advice for Brits planning to fly to Australia. After all, a 24-hour flight can disrupt your sleep schedule and cause severe stress, the DailyStar writes.
Kara Eastman, an Emirates crew member, explained that a mega-trip should not be treated the same way as other shorter flights, and that being well prepared and systematically planning can significantly improve your well-being during and after the trip.
It's important to avoid serious jet lag - when your biological clock gets thrown off, leading to sleep problems. She explained that there is a trick she uses to feel well balanced. For example, Kara advises traveling to the Australian city of Perth rather than to other cities, as the time difference is less. In addition, strategically plan your sleep time.
"One of the advantages of visiting Perth is that it is only eight hours ahead of UK time, compared to Sydney, which is on the east coast and is 11 hours ahead. My best advice is to stay on schedule at your destination to synchronize your body's 24-hour internal clock as much as possible. So, if you arrive in the evening, try to stay awake during the flight and go to bed immediately after landing," Kara explained.
Kara's best tips
Minimize the weight of your carry-on luggage as much as possible: take only the essentials so you don't have to deal with heavy luggage throughout your trip, especially if you have long layovers or airport waits.
I recommend bringing a good foam neck pillow and earplugs. Also, a long trip can dry out your skin, so bring small bottles of moisturizer and if you don't mind surprising others, I've seen people use full-face cosmetic masks on the plane.
Travel in comfort. Take an eye mask with you to protect yourself from light while sleeping on the plane.
Get some exercise. At least walk around the cabin to get the blood flowing, and compression socks are also good.
Choose the right seat. For example, near the aisle so that I can easily get up and walk around without disturbing the passengers next to me. I know others who prefer to sit by the window to sleep better, so it's really a personal thing.
Emirates has recently entered into a partnership agreement with Tourism Western Australia and will expand the capacity of its Dubai-Perth route in December. It's not hard to see why demand has increased. Western Australia includes some amazing destinations such as Perth, not to mention Cottesloe and Scarborough beaches, which are great places to relax with cool bars and cafes, and Trigg Beach, a great place for snorkeling.
Perth's Fremantle Markets are great for foodies, and a bike or bus tour of Rottnest Island is a must - you might even see dolphins and sea lions! Meanwhile, Kalamunda boasts a historic village, gallery exhibitions and great hiking.
Travel Wise wrote that American Airlines has simplified the rules for transporting animals in the cabin.
