10 things you're not allowed to do during a flight
It's no secret that the job of a flight attendant is not an easy one and is accompanied by a certain amount of stress. The cause for concern can be anything from an intense schedule and work delays to safety protocols.
However, all flight attendants will probably agree that the most difficult part of the job is dealing with demanding and irritable passengers. Conde Nast Traveler shared the insights of a former flight attendant and listed 10 things you shouldn't do on an airplane.
Drinking excessively
While it's understandable to want to relax and enjoy the flight, excessive alcohol consumption is not advisable on an airplane. Firstly, there is less oxygen in the cabin, making passengers more susceptible to dizziness. Secondly, airlines may ban disruptive passengers and impose fines.
Smoking on the plane
This should be obvious, given the enclosed space and the presence of passengers, including children and those sensitive to tobacco smoke. However, some passengers still disregard this safety rule.
Altercations
Nervous or agitated passengers who cannot control themselves pose a common challenge for flight attendants. Sometimes, attendants have to intervene personally to separate passengers and ensure the safety of everyone onboard.
Conflict over a reclining seat
This is a contentious issue because one passenger paid for the ability to recline their seat, while the passenger behind loses legroom. However, aggression in this situation is not justified. Although it may be inconvenient for the passenger behind, the passenger in front has the right to adjust their seat position.
Disorder
Flight attendants should not have to clean up after every passenger. It's better to dispose of trash when flight attendants come through the aisles with trash bags. Additionally, passengers should not leave paper towels on the toilet surfaces, as the bins close automatically to prevent fire hazards.
Bare feet
Some passengers feel the need to prop up their feet or encroach on another passenger's space, often doing so without wearing socks, exposing their bare feet. While there are no rules prohibiting passengers from removing their shoes and socks, they should do so without disturbing others.
Misuse of the call button without an emergency
Passengers often misunderstand the purpose of the call button, using it for non-urgent requests. If the request can wait, it's better to approach the flight attendant in person in the galley. This is the proper etiquette for using the call button.
Disrespect towards the crew
It's important to remember that flight attendants are also individuals who deserve respect and courtesy. Instances of disrespect towards flight attendants, such as throwing food, pushing, using foul language, or making inappropriate remarks, are unacceptable. Always adhere to the principles of politeness and treat others with respect.
Disregard for safety regulations
Ignoring safety regulations, such as getting up when the "fasten seat belt" sign is illuminated during landing, is not advisable. Passengers should remain seated with their seat belts fastened until the aircraft has come to a complete stop and reached the parking area. This is crucial because during landing, unexpected situations like sudden stops, engine malfunctions, emergency evacuations, or severe turbulence may occur if the aircraft is still airborne.
